Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then found many other marked cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.
An important official commented the vandalism made him without words and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
